The Masonic Lamb

Masons use a masonic lambskin apron. But one may ask? Why a lambskin apron?

The lamb is a symbol of purity and innocence.

Operative Freemasons wear aprons to prevent garments from stain. Speculative Freemasons wear an apron to remind us that we must stay away from things that will defile us morally. The Bible says that we must keep ourselves unspotted from the world and our garments must remain white.

James 1:26-27: If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world

James 1:21: Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Galatians 5:19-21: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

The Masonic Lamb

First Degree: In Ancient Masonry, the lamb was the symbol of innocence. The first degree has instructions which go thus: ‘The Lamb has always been an emblem of innocence in all ages.’

This is why a freemason apron must be made of lambskin. In the degrees of chivalry and advanced Freemason degrees, the lamb is a symbol of Christ Jesus as is seen in Christian iconology.

When John the Baptist saw Jesus Christ approaching, he said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God.’ Also, the prophets of past times said the Messiah would suffer on the cross like a lamb under the knife of a butcher.

Paschal Lamb or the Holy Lamb of God: The Paschal Lamb is the lamb that the Jews offer to God at the Passover or the Paschal feast. The Paschal Lamb has now been transferred to Easter, Chivalric Freemasonry, Christian symbolism etc. These symbols are also found in modern Templarism.

How the Lamb of God is being represented in Christian Art: The Lamb of God or Paschal lamb is a Masonic symbol and a Christian symbol also known as the Agnus Dei. In Christian Art, the lamb is represented as a lamb standing on the ground on banners with which a cross is inscribed on the banner.

The Knights Templar adopted the Paschal Lamb as a symbol which is borne on their banners. The Square which it surmounts is the jewel of the Generalissimo of a Commandery. The Lamb is a symbol of the Cross, the passion of Christ, and the banner of the Victory of Christ over hell and death.

The Deed of the Knights Templar

In the Deed of the English Knights Templar which granted lands in Cambridgeshire, the seal is the Holy Land and the arms of the master of the Temple in London were a cross guides, argent and on the nombril point thereof, a Holy Lamb on the centre of a red cross in a white field.

The Passover and the Sacrificial Lamb

Before Christianity, Freemasonry and the Knights Templar existed, the sacrificial Lamb was mentioned in various parts of the Bible. It was first mentioned in the book of Exodus. Exodus was first in the Torah and later the Bible. Exodus was written by Moses.

Exodus 12: 21

Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the Passover.

The Passover name is a reminder that God passed over the homes of the Jews when the firstborn sons of the Egyptians were killed.

Jewish Lamb: The Jewish Lamb is a symbol of God’s mercy as shown when he spared the lives of the firstborns in Egypt. The Jewish Lamb is celebrated every spring of the year with a special dinner or feast called seder.

Christian Lamb: The Christian Lamb is a symbol of Jesus Christ in the Christian Faith. He is celebrated at Easter.

The Masonic Lamb: The Masonic Lamb is a symbol from the Holy Bible. It represents purity mentally, physically and spiritually.
